LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The temperature in Freedom Hall remained hot. Smoking hot.
For the second straight game, the Bellarmine University men's basketball team lit it up from the perimeter, and the Knights were strong in nearly every other aspect of their performance Tuesday night in an 86-45 win over Wabash.
Bellarmine (4-6) drilled a program-record 23 3-pointers in Sunday's 110-38 win over Alice Lloyd, and the Knights didn't exactly have a comedown two days later against perennial Division III power Wabash. Bellarmine drained 13 trifectas against the Little Giants and was even more accurate at 61.9 percent from beyond the arc than it was from deep in the record-breaking performance against Alice Lloyd (57.5 percent).
While the 3-point shooting stood out again, Bellarmine excelled across the board. The Knights shot 55.7 percent from the floor and registered 20 assists on 34 made baskets while turning the ball over only five times. The well-rounded offensive outing also included point advantages of 40-18 in the paint, 24-2 off turnovers and 22-0 on fast breaks.
"Nobody played more than 24 minutes," Knights Coach
Scott Davenport said. "For the most part, we played very clean. We had good execution out of timeouts. This was work."
Bellarmine delivered on the other end as well. Defensively, the Knights limited Wabash to 35.8-percent shooting overall and 25.9 percent from 3-point range.
"Those were measurable goals and achieved them both," Davenport said of the desired shooting percentages defensively. "We had 28 deflections at halftime. There was a big roar in our huddle, and that's what it was about."
Bellarmine racked up 11 steals, led by three thefts apiece from senior guard
Juston Betz and freshman guard
Peter Suder. Sophomore forward
Langdon Hatton pulled down a season-high nine rebounds as the Knights outrebounded Little Giants 37-26.
Bellarmine had at least five double-figure scorers for the second consecutive game. Freshman guard
Jaylen Fairman tallied a career-high 16 points, freshman guard
Ben Johnson registered 12, senior guard
Alec Pfriem and senior forward
Sam DeVault collected 11 apiece and sophomore forward
Curt Hopf chipped in 10. Pfriem and DeVault canned a trio of 3-pointers apiece while Suder accounted for a game-high five assists.
Bellarmine carried over its sizzling shooting against Alice Lloyd into the first half against Wabash. The Knights built a double-digit lead a little over eight minutes into the game and, after a flurry of 3-pointers compliments of Hopf, Priem and Johnson, their advantage rose over 20. They took a 49-23 lead into halftime behind 63.3-percent shooting, including 70 percent (7-10) from long range.
Ten Knights scored, 10 had at least one rebound and 10 had at least one assist.
Bellarmine will host Murray State at 4 p.m. (ET) Saturday.
"Murray, we all know, is a great basketball team," Davenport said.
