BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. — In its final game in the Jerry Bryson Classic, the Bellarmine University baseball team fell 9-5 to host Gardner-Webb despite holding a 13-9 advantage in hits at Bill Masters Field at John Henry Moss Stadium.
Sophomore first baseman
Davis Crane went 4-for-4 with an RBI for Bellarmine (1-3). Senior shortstop
Clayton Mehlbauer went 3-for-5 with a solo homer, while senior right fielder
Jacob Mulcahy launched a two-run homer and collected three RBIs overall in his 2-for-4 outing against GWU (1-3).
Gardner-Webb built a 7-1 lead after four innings and held on as Bellarmine threatened late. The Knights had two on with the tying run on deck in the last inning before the Diamond 'Dogs pulled it out.
Mehlbauer smacked his first home run of the season in the third, a solo shot that got Bellarmine on the board after the Knights had fallen behind 4-0. Crane picked up an RBI single in the sixth, and Mulcahy notched his first home run of the year after cranking a two-run shot in the eighth to cut the deficit to 9-4.
Mulcahy drove in the final run of the game with a sacrifice fly in the ninth plating senior third baseman
Colin Bertsch, who registered two hits.
Bellarmine used six pitchers. The final three — junior lefthander
Steven Thom, junior righthander
Adam Spalding and senior lefthander
Nick Parrish — did not allow an earned run over the final 3.0 innings.
Bellarmine will play at 4 p.m. (ET) Tuesday at Murray State.
