KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Bellarmine women's tennis had a short turnaround and a steep test against the no. 20 ranked Tennessee Volunteers in a pair of road matches on Sunday. Tennessee topped the Knights 4-0 in the first match of the day and 7-0 in the afternoon match.
The Volunteers were dominant in their effort and aided by Bellarmine forfeits at no. 3 doubles and no. 6 singles. UT took care of business starting with doubles sweeping the no. 1 and no. 2 slots. After quick wins at no. 1, no. 4, and no.5 in singles, Tennessee locked up the first match. The second match was much of the same as UT advanced to 6-2 on the season.
Even with the losses, Sunday was an exciting opportunity for Bellarmine playing in its second year in Division I.
"Not often do you get to play against a top-20 team in the country," Knights Head Coach
Brian Slack said. "Tennessee is a great program with a storied history. You walk into their facility and see who has played there, and we're happy to have the opportunity to play there. Thank you to Coach Alison Ojeda and Jarryd Chaplin for having us. We came out and competed from the first point to the last, and that's the biggest thing for me. We will take a couple of days to rest and get back at it on Friday at home!"
Bellarmine hosts Eastern Michigan in its final non-conference home match on Friday, Feb. 25. The action begins at 6:00 p.m. at the Eddie Weber Tennis Complex.
