RICHMOND, Ky.—The Bellarmine Knights dropped their regular season finale on Saturday afternoon, falling to the host Eastern Kentucky Colonels 72-58 in an ASUN contest in McBrayer Arena.
Eastern had the hot hand from beyond the 3-point arc, finishing 14 of 29 on the day and making 49 percent overall. Meanwhile, the Knights were held to just 42.6 percent shooting
EKU did most of its damage in the first half, outscoring Bellarmine 39-22 in the opening 20 minutes as the Knights made just nine of 29 field goals (31%). Bellarmine responded in the second half and outscored the Colonels 39-36, but never got closer than 14 points.
"At the first media timeout, the score was 9-9, and my whole message in the timeout was that we had no defensive urgency whatsoever, said Bellarmine Coach
Scott Davenport. "We lost the next four, four-minute segments by a total of 17 points, and the game is essentially over."
Both teams had three double-digit scorers on the day. For Eastern Jumaru Brown tossed in a game-high 22 with Cooper Robb adding 14 and Curt Lewis chipping in 11.
The Knights were paced by
Garrett Tipton's 14 points and
Juston Betz's nine rebounds.
Dylan Penn finished with 11 points, six rebounds and five assists.
Bellarmine finishes the regular season 17-13 overall and 11-5 in ASUN play for second place in the West Division.
The Knights move on to the ASUN Championship Tournament next week, where they'll host a quarterfinal game on Thursday, March 3 at 7 p.m. in Freedom Hall. Bellarmine will play the winner of the Florida Gulf Coast-North Alabama game.
