LOUISVILLE, Ky.—When a team turns in record performances on both offense and defense in the same game, you know that it's going to be a good day for that team.
The Bellarmine lacrosse team had one of those days on Saturday in Owsley B. Frazier Stadium as the Knights put up a program-record 23 goals and held the visiting Hampton Pirates to just three scores, tying the school mark for fewest goals allowed.
The Knights (1-5) stuffed the stat sheet as 18 different players scored at least one point. Leading the way was freshman Benjamin Hubbs with three goals and two assists while Kyle Playsted, Brody Lowry, and Luke Legnard each contributed a pair of goals and a pair of assists.
The offensive production not only resulted in a school record for goals in a game, it also set a new program-best with 38 points, besting the 34-point effort against Detroit Mercy in 2009.
The game's outcome was really never in doubt as the Knights bolted out of the gates, scoring less than a minute into the contest and piling up an 8-0 lead after the first quarter. Bellarmine continued pitching a shutout until the third period when the Pirates' Andre Myers scored a man-up goal less than 30 seconds into the second half.
Bellarmine answered with seven goals in the third quarter and took a 19-1 advantage into the final period, where they outpaced Hampton 4-2 to make the final margin 23-3.
The team stats reflect what a dominating performance it was for the Knights. Bellarmine outshot the Pirates 59-18, including 34-10 on shots on goal. Turnovers (18-34) and ground balls (41-24) were also heavily in favor of the home team, and the Knights won the faceoff battle 15-14.
While the offensive numbers were staggering for the Knights, no individual player broke or matched records. On defense, however, Jon Robbins turned in another record performance by matching his own school record of six caused turnovers in a game. He also scooped up three ground balls to move into second place on Bellarmine's all-time list with 145.
Bellarmine now hits the road for its next two contests, playing at Bryant on Tuesday and at High Point on Saturday. The Knights' next home game is March 12 when they host Jacksonville at noon.
