Late run to close game lifts EKU over women's basketball

RICHMOND, Ky. — After securing its first ASUN win Thursday, the Bellarmine University women's basketball team put itself in position for another Saturday at McBrayer Arena.

Unfortunately for the Knights, Eastern Kentucky managed to close the game on an 11-0 run to pull out a 79-68 victory in ASUN West action in the regular-season finale.

Junior guard Jaela Johnson paced Bellarmine (4-23, 1-15 ASUN) with 16 points and senior guard Bailee Harney added 13. Senior guard Kathleen Scott tallied 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists against Eastern Kentucky (14-15, 7-9) while senior guard Presley Brown collected seven boards.

Bria Bass led four Eastern Kentucky players in double figures with 16 points. She was 9-for-9 at the free-throw line in a contest where a hefty 55 total fouls were called, with Bellarmine whistled for one more than the Colonels.

At times, particularly in the first half, the game turned into a de facto free-throw contest. EKU went 28-for-31 (90.3) from the line overall, while Bellarmine connected on 19-of-23 attempts (82.6). Johnson sank 7-of-8 and Scott canned 6-of-7 from the charity stripe for the Knights.

Although Eastern Kentucky built a 12-point lead a little over midway through the third quarter, Bellarmine surged back to take the lead with a 17-4 run. The Colonels regrouped to take a 60-57 advantage into the fourth.

Bellarmine would hold a three-point lead early in the last quarter, but it was back and forth and Scott tied it up at 68 with 3:19 left after getting fouled on a 3-point attempt and nailing all three free throws. Scott's last free throw would represent the last point Bellarmine scored.

Eastern Kentucky took the lead for good on Alice Recanati's old-fashioned three-point play. It jump-started an 11-0 run as the Knights went cold from the floor over the last three minutes.

Bellarmine will play Wednesday at Stetson in the opening round of the ASUN Tournament.
