Michigan runs out to big lead, downs Bellarmine 22-13

BEVERLY HILLS, Mich.—The Bellarmine men's lacrosse team fell 22-13 to the University of Michigan on Saturday afternoon indoors at the Detroit Country Day Fieldhouse.

After keeping it close over the game's first 20 minutes, Bellarmine saw Michigan score nine unanswered goals to take a 13-3 lead at the 12:23 mark of the third quarter.  The Knights outscored Michigan 7-4 in the final period but couldn't get back into contention.

"I'm really disappointed in how we cleared the ball today," said Bellarmine Coach Andrew Whitley.  "You can't give anyone that many transition opportunities and expect to be successful. We're going to have to continue to work in that area because I think our biggest issue was lack of poise under pressure. Michigan forced us to made decisions under duress, and we didn't respond well."

With 22 goals on the day, the Wolverines had several outstanding offensive performances. Michael Boehm notched six goals and three assists and didn't even lead Michigan in points as Josh Zawada posted five goals and five assists for 10 points.  Jake Bonomi also had a hat trick for Michigan with four goals and an assist.

For Bellarmine, reigning ASUN Offensive Player of the Week Brayden Brown filled the stat sheet with five goals on just seven shots while Christian Della Rocco and Benny O'Rourk each tallied three points with each recording a goal and two assists. Jesse Roth added two goals for the Knights.

"There were moments where I thought we showed flashes of excellence," Whitley said, "but there were too many sloppy turnovers and mental errors at both ends of the field for us to compete consistently."

Jon Robbins, who was the ASUN Defensive Player of the Week, continued his strong play with a game-high four turnovers.

"We'll continue to chip away," Whitley added. " It's a long season and I'm still optimistic about this team."

The Knights will make their home debut on Saturday, Feb. 12 when they welcome Marquette to Owsley B. Frazier Stadium for a noon contest.
