LOUISVILLE, Ky.—In a lacrosse game that will be long remembered for being played in a snowstorm, it was the team from Florida that performed the best in the wintry conditions.
The 15th-ranked Jacksonville Dolphins didn't let the conditions slow them down as they rolled to a 16-2 victory over Bellarmine on Friday night in Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
Originally scheduled for Saturday at noon, the game was moved up to try to avoid the frigid temperatures predicted for Saturday's noon start time. While the temperatures stayed mostly in the 30s, snow fell throughout the game and steady winds made the "feel-like" temperature well below the freezing mark.
Despite the less than favorable weather, Jacksonville (6-2) didn't seem to miss a beat in piling up 12 first half goals and outshooting the Knights 28-7 over the first 30 minutes. Bellarmine struggled to gain offensive possessions with a sub-.500 clearing percentage and just three first half faceoff wins.
Jacksonville took an early 2-0 lead, then Bellarmine exacerbated the deficit by surrendering an own goal with just under nine minutes to play in the first quarter. The Knights atoned for the own goal miscue when
Tayo Oladunmoye corralled a pass from
Benjamin Hubbs in front of the cage and got it past Dolphin goalie Luke Millican at the 8:01 mark of the first.
Unfortunately for the Knights, it would be another 37 minutes before they scored again, and during that drought, the Dolphins poured it on with 13 unanswered goals.
Bellarmine's
Kyle Playsted notched the only goal of the fourth period, which came less than a minute into the frame on an assisted goal.
Jackson Intrieri (2G, 4A) and Jacob Greiner (4G, 2A) led Jacksonville with six points apiece while Tewaarton Award Watch List player Max Waldbaum finished the game with two goals and three assists.
Final statistics show Jacksonville with a 43-18 shot advantage, and the Dolphins had more thant three times as many shots on goal at 33-10. Both teams turned the ball over frequently in the snowy conditions, combining for 65 turnovers in the game.
Bellarmine goalies
Dante Batista and
JC Higginbotham combined to made 17 saves while JU's three goalkeepers came up with eight stops between them.
The Knights return to action on Saturday, March 19 when they travel to Lexington, Virginia to take on the Keydets of Virginia Military Institute at noon.
