Women's tennis falls in ASUN opener at Florida Gulf Coast

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Bellarmine women's tennis opened its ASUN schedule on Friday, with the Knights falling 7-0 at Florida Gulf Coast.

The Eagles, picked second in the ASUN pre-season poll, swept the doubles matches in hot weather.  Ekaterina Tikhonko and Madison Devillez put up a strong fight though in the no. 1 slot, eventually falling 6-3.

Devillez also put up a strong showing in no. 3 singles, taking an early lead in the first set against Ida Ferding.  Later in the set, Ferding rallied to win 7-5 and took set two 6-2.  Emma Bardet, Isabella Colemnares, Fanny Norin, Jordana Ossa, Gabriela Macias won each of the other singles matches as well.

"It was a tough match today," Knights Head Coach Brian Slack said.  "It's the first time we've been out in the heat like this.  The scores don't show how we competed from top to bottom.  FGCU is a good team and closed things out when given the chance.  We will get back at it on Sunday at Kennesaw State."

The Knights make the quick trip north to Georgia to face Kennesaw State on Sunday.  Action begins at 10:00 a.m. ET on Sunday.
