Lipscomb edges baseball 3-2 in well-pitched opener

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Pitching mostly ruled the day, but Lipscomb used a pair of homers to edge the Bellarmine University baseball team 3-2 in ASUN action Friday at Knights Field.

David Coppedge led off the game with a homer and Caleb Ketchup had a two-run shot in the sixth in accounting for the three runs for Lipscomb (13-13, 2-5 ASUN). Bellarmine (3-22, 1-6) scored a pair of runs in the third, but the Knights couldn't plate any more.

It was a well-pitched game on both sides. Lipscomb's Michael Dunkelberger (3-1) collected the win after striking out six while allowing two runs — neither earned — on three hits and two walks in 6.0 innings pitched. Matthew Bohnert then struck out five in 2.1 scoreless innings of relief, and Trey Nordmann followed by tallying his fourth save after recording the final two outs in the ninth.

Junior righthander Nolan Pender allowed the two home runs but was solid otherwise for Bellarmine, pitching his way out of jams in yielding three earned runs on seven hits and two walks with five strikeouts in 6.0 innings pitched. Junior righthander Drew Buhr fanned three and allowed only one hit in a nearly flawless 3.0 innings of relief.

With Bellarmine trailing 1-0, senior right fielder A.J. Arnold reached on throwing error to start the third, and junior second baseman Brett Pfaadt followed with a single. After a sacrifice bunt by senior center fielder Jack Ockerman, senior left fielder Matt Higgins and senior third baseman Colin Bertsch delivered back-to-back two-out RBI singles.

Bellarmine maintained the 2-1 lead through five innings, but Ketchup followed a one-out bunt single by Tiger Borom with a go-ahead two-run homer to left center in the sixth.

Bohnert set down all seven batters he faced, including five straight strikeouts, in a dominant effort bridging the gap between Dunkelberger and Nordmann.

Higgins went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks to lead Bellarmine. Ketchup was 3-for-3 for Lipscomb.

The second game of the series will unfold at 2 p.m. (ET) Saturday at Knights Field.
