LOUISVILLE – The Bellarmine University baseball team completed a three-game sweep of North Alabama with a 6-3 victory Sunday in ASUN action at Knights Field.
While Bellarmine (6-25, 4-8 ASUN) romped 18-3 and 17-3 in Saturday's series-opening doubleheader, the Knights rode stellar long relief from senior lefthander
Nick Parrish, flawless defense and a pair of three-run innings to defeat the Lions (8-22, 2-10) in the finale.
Parrish (1-0) entered with the contest tied at 3 and proceeded to toss 4.0 scoreless innings. It was the longest appearance of his career. Parrish didn't allow a runner past first and didn't face more than four batters in any inning.
Bellarmine scored three runs apiece in the second and seventh innings. In the second, junior third baseman
Peyton Back led off with a double and junior first baseman
Noah Nelson was hit by a pitch with one out.
Freshman second baseman
Casey Sorg brought them both in when he laced a triple down the line. Senior center fielder
Jack Ockerman then drove in Sorg with a single up the middle.
North Alabama scored twice in the fourth and once in the fifth to tie it up. In the seventh, with runners on first and second and two outs, Back lined a single through the left side that brought in senior shortstop
Clayton Mehlbauer with the go-ahead run.
Sophomore designated hitter
Ashton Smith padded the lead by smacking a two-run double to left center. Parrish and the Bellarmine defense – which did not commit a single error in the series – took care of the rest.
Smith, Back, Ockerman and senior right fielder
Jacob Mulcahy had two hits apiece for Bellarmine. Smith went 9-for-12 in the series.
Bellarmine will play at 6:30 p.m. (ET) Tuesday at Kentucky.
