Early Jacksonville State runs and strong pitching stymies Bellarmine in doubleheader

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. — It was a tough day at the plate for Bellarmine, and the Knights fell twice to ASUN-West foe Jacksonville State on the road Saturday afternoon.

The Knights (10-37, 1-19 ASUN) managed just two total hits between the two games, while JSU (29-19, 11-8 ASUN) racked up 14 runs in the doubleheader sweep.   The final score of game one was 8-0 (5 inn.), while the final score in game two was 6-0 in favor of the Gamecocks

Game One

A massive first inning for Jacksonville State was the big difference in game one.  A walk, single, and walk loaded the bases for JSU immediately and brought up DP Addie Robinson with one out.  Robinson proceeded to smack a home run over the right field fence for a grand slam, giving the Gamecocks a 4-0 lead.  Another home run from Brantly Bonds was of the two-run variety, pushing the lead to 6-0 in the first.

Jacksonville State added the winning runs in the fifth.  The Gamecocks got an unearned run and plated another thanks to a RBI single from Holly Stewart which ended the game by run rule in five innings.

Bellarmine's only base-runner came in the second inning when Emily O'Dee singled through the right side.  Outside of O'Dee's single, Jacksonville State's Kat Carter retired all of the other 15 Bellarmine batters through five innings, earning her 15th win of the season.

Claire Lehmkuhler, Megan Murphy, and Carson Goatley all pitched respectively for Bellarmine in game one.  Murphy had the strongest outing, tossing 3.1 scoreless innings and allowing just one hit.

Game Two

More first inning production was a big help for Jacksonville State as the Gamecocks scored three runs in the initial frame.  Sidney Wagnon and Karsen Mosley both walked to start the inning bringing up Megan Fortner with no outs.  Fortner then homered to left field, pushing JSU in front 3-0.

Jacksonville State was held to just one base-runner the next two innings but struck again in the fourth.  Following a single, walk, hit-by-pitch, and RBI walk, Bellarmine limited the damage for the time being.  With a 4-0 lead and two outs, however, doubled to left field, plating two more runs.  Jacksonville State carried that 6-0 lead through the rest of the game.

Bellarmine's only hit came from Hannah Webb in the top of the fourth inning.  While Webb's 10-game hit streak ended in game one, she now has a hit in 11 of her last 12 games.  The base knock, paired with a Kayla Bauer walk provided Bellarmine's best chance to score.  A fly-out and strikeout, however, ended the threat.  The Knights were unable to put a runner on base the rest of the game.

Game three of the series is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. (1:00 p.m. CT) tomorrow afternoon and can be viewed on ESPN+.
