To recognize the 50th nniversary of the passage of Title IX, Bellarmine Athletics is highlighting nine women who have made remarkable impacts on our programs. Today, we feature another Bellarmine legend, Marilyn Staples.
Calling Marilyn a Bellarmine legend, certainly isn't a stretch--she was inducted into the Bellarmine Athletics Hall of Fame in 2002 in the "Legends" category. The only issue with inducting her at that time is that her impact on Bellarmine Athletics had just begun to scratch the surface as she went on serve the department nearly another decade before retiring in 2011.
Marilyn came to Bellarmine in 1968 as the assistant director of student activities and worked in student affairs for 23 years, where she also served as associate dean of students and dean of students. Among her many roles, she advised student government, student activities, cheerleaders and chaired the university awards committee. She transitioned into an athletics role in the early 1990s and became Bellarmine's first senior woman administrator and compliance officer while serving as assistant athletic director. She also performed many other duties including serving as an official scorekeeper and statistician for many years.
Among the many awards and recognitions Marilyn has received at Bellarmine include the William T. Miles Award, the SGA Commitment to Excellence, and the Sister Pat Lowman Student Advocate Award.
