Bellarmine storms back to take opener, but falls in four sets to IUPUI

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine Knights closed play in the Hawthorn Suites Louisville East Bellarmine Invitation by dropping a 1-3 decision to the IUPUI Jaguars in Knights Hall on Saturday afternoon.

Bellarmine pulled out a thrilling 29-27 first set victory when Anna Lococo served up an ace to win it after the Knights fended off four IUPUI set points.  However, the visitors rebounded to take the next three sets 25-22, 25-20, 25-18.

"It was a tough weekend for us from a results standpoint," said Bellarmine Coach Rick Nold, "but I love how hard we are playing. I thought we did a really good job in the serve/serve receive, but we weren't quite able to finish some of those plays."

Ultimately the match came down to being able to finish the plays, and the Jaguars won that battle by outhitting the Knights .280 to .126.  While IUPUI converted on 65 of its 150 attacks, Bellarmine recorded 43 kills on 143 swings. In the service game, the home team did enjoy a significant advantage, recording eight aces while committing eight service errors compared to two aces and 13 errors for the Jaguars.

Individually, the visitors saw four different players record double-digit kills, led by Briana Brown's 21.  For Bellarmine, Jayme Scott, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, led the way with 14 kills while Hannah Brown added 11.

In addition to her good serving, Lococo also gave a solid effort on defense with a match-high 18 digs. Bellarmine setter Macie Garrison, meanwhile, notched her second double-double in a Bellarmine uniform with 35 assists and 11 digs.

The Knights, who drop to 3-6 on the season, are back in action this coming Friday and Saturday in the Saluki Invitational, hosted by Southern Illinois.  Bellarmine will face Southeast Missouri State and Alabama A&M on the first day, then square off against the host Salukis on Saturday.
