LOUISVILLE, Ky. — ASUN action began how much of nonconference competition played out for the Bellarmine University women's soccer team.
While Bellarmine owned a lead at halftime, Central Arkansas answered almost immediately after the break, and the contest ultimately ended in yet another tie for the Knights at 1-1 on Thursday night in Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
Bellarmine (0-3-5, 0-0-1 ASUN) notched its second straight draw and fifth in eight matches on the season. The Knights have 13 stalemates in 27 games over the last two years.
Entering the contest, Bellarmine and Central Arkansas (2-4-2, 0-0-1) had both been shut out in five of seven matches, but that was not evident throughout the course of the contest as there were plenty of close calls in addition to one goal each for both squads.
Bellarmine struck in the 18th minute. After senior midfielder
Brielle Heuglin passed to senior forward
Tristan Whalen toward the right of the box, Whalen crossed to freshman midfielder
Alexa Orozco, who ripped a shot from 10 yards inside the right post for her team-best second goal of the season.
Bellarmine carried the 1-0 lead into the intermission, but Central Arkansas needed only 35 seconds to tie it up in the second half. After receiving a pass from Sydney Brough, Gracie Hair rocketed a shot into the net for her first goal of the season.
Neither team would locate the net again, although both came very close. Central Arkansas finished with a 15-12 edge in shots, including 6-5 on frame.
Senior goalkeeper
Elyssa Francis registered five saves for Bellarmine.
The Knights will host North Alabama in an ASUN contest at 1 p.m. (ET) Sunday.
