Men's soccer blanks Jacksonville 1-0 for first ASUN victory

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Bellarmine University men's soccer team scored with less than one minute remaining in the first half and made it stand up as the Knights defeated Jacksonville 1-0 on Saturday night in ASUN action at Southern Oak Stadium.

Redshirt freshman midfielder Ben Griffis netted his first career goal for Bellarmine (4-3-1, 1-2 ASUN), which notched its first conference win. Junior defender Brock Pope collected his second assist of the season as Jacksonville (3-3-2, 0-2-1) became the Knights' second straight shutout victim.

Griffis' goal was not only the game-winner, it was Bellarmine's first in ASUN play this season. The match was also the first time this season Bellarmine scored one goal in a game — previously the Knights had either scored twice or been shut out.

It appeared as if the teams would head into halftime scoreless, but Bellarmine had other ideas. From the right side, Pope spotted Griffis just inside the box. Griffis quickly settled the ball and rocketed a shot inside the upper right corner of the net for a 1-0 lead with 53 seconds left before the intermission.

The contest didn't feature a significant number of shots, but Jacksonville did have a prime look with about six minutes remaining. Bellarmine senior goalkeeper Matthew Brozovich made a clutch stop on an attempt from close range with a superb kick save.

Jacksonville would get off one more shot, but it was nonthreatening as Bellarmine earned its second clean sheet in a row.

Jacksonville held a 7-5 advantage in shots, but they were at two apiece on goal. Corner kicks were even at two as well.

Bellarmine hosts ASUN counterpart FGCU at 7 p.m. (ET) next Saturday.
