LOUISVILLE, Ky. — After a string of road games — and stalemates — the Bellarmine University women's soccer team will return to Owsley B. Frazier Stadium on Sunday when the Knights welcome Dayton for a 3 p.m. (ET) contest.
Two years ago, Bellarmine (0-1-3) made its Division-I debut at Dayton (3-1-1). The Flyers captured a 2-0 victory.
Dayton competes in the Atlantic 10, which ends a four-game streak of facing Horizon League opponents for Bellarmine. The Knights played to a draw in the final three of those matches, with scoreless deadlocks at IUPUI and at Northern Kentucky bracketing a 1-1 stalemate at Purdue Fort Wayne. Bellarmine has tied six Horizon League foes over the last two seasons.
Dayton is coming off a 4-0 home loss to Ohio State, but the Flyers' start has been impressive and backed up its No. 2 projection in the A-10 preseason coaches' poll. Dayton has notched wins over Wright State (2-0), Northern Kentucky (3-0) and Kent State (1-0) while opening the season with a 2-2 draw against Toledo.
Forward Itala Gemelli is the reigning A-10 Offensive Player of the Year and preceded that with league Rookie of the Year honors. She scored 12 goals last season and is the team leader this year with three. Three goalkeepers have logged 90 minutes or more for the Flyers.
Bellarmine's defense has recorded shutouts in two of the last three matches. The Knights have allowed only three goals in four games. Bellarmine entered weekend action tied for third in the ASUN in goals-against average (0.75).
Elyssa Francis earned the clean sheet in goal against Northern Kentucky for Bellarmine. The senior goalkeeper now has 29 shutouts in her career, which ranks second on the program's career list and is six behind Amy Kunowski.
