Field hockey nabs early lead but drops morning match at UC-Davis

DAVIS, Calif. — Despite an early lead and its highest-scoring game of the season, Bellarmine field hockey fell to UC-Davis by a final score of 4-2 on Sunday afternoon.

It was an afternoon match by eastern standards, but due to a heat warning, the match had an early 9:00 a.m. start time in the pacific time zone.

The early wake-up call was not an issue for the Knights as senior Amber Hofenk Jerembo tallied her second goal of the season in the first quarter.  Twelve minutes into the contest, Hofenk Jerembo raced left-to-right just inside the circle and fired across goal to the far post to give Bellarmine a 1-0 advantage.

Sunday marked Bellarmine's first lead of the season, and they held it until the early stages of the second quarter despite being out-shot 8-2 in the first half.  UC-Davis finally broke through at the 21 minute mark.  Lizzy Tedrow scored six minutes into the second period, and Brooke Sanchez gave the Aggies a 2-1 lead with another goal just five minutes later.

UC-Davis carried its momentum into the second half, and so did Sanchez specifically, as she scored her second goal just a minute into the third period.  Karly Redman then put the game out of reach, scoring with just under two minutes remaining in the quarter.  The Aggies racked up a game-high eight shots in the third quarter, and it paid off with a pair of goals and 4-1 lead.

Like the first quarter, however, Bellarmine won the fourth period, thanks to a Marit van der Bend goal with about 10 minutes remaining in the game.  van der Bend took the ball from the top left of the circle and sprinted to within several feet just right of the cage.  It was a tough angle, but a strong shot from van der Bend that snuck in for her first goal of the season.  Senior Alexa Rastigue was credited with the assist – her first assist since the spring 2021 season.

UC-Davis out-shot Bellarmine 20-7 for the game (9-4 SOG), but penalty corners were even at three apiece.  Peyton Hobson and Lindsay Sturgeon each had shots on goal for Bellarmine coming off the bench.

In goal, Kailey Workman played the first half for Bellarmine and made three saves, while Danni Swallow played the second half and stopped two shots.

After a four-game road stretch to start the season, the Knights have their home opener on Saturday, Sept. 10 versus James Madison.  Action begins at 5:00 p.m. and can be viewed on BU Knights Sports Network.
