LOUISVILLE, Ky. — ASUN leader Stetson rarely stopped raining 3-pointers in defeating the Bellarmine University men's basketball team 80-51 on Thursday night in Freedom Hall.
Unbeaten in conference play, Stetson (10-6, 5-0 ASUN) sank 19 of its 40 attempts from long range against Bellarmine (7-11, 2-3), which has lost its last four games in Freedom Hall including three in league play. The Hatters attempted only 17 shots inside the arc.
Bellarmine finished 3-for-15 from deep as the Knights were outscored by 48 points from long range.
"Never in my coaching life have I seen a team outscore another team 57-9 from the 3-point line," Bellarmine Coach
Scott Davenport said. "I guess if you coach long enough, you'll see everything."
Jalen Blackmon and Luke Brown drained six 3-pointers apiece for Stetson, with Brown missing only one attempt from deep. Blackmon scored a game-high 21 points while Brown poured in all 20 of his points in the second half. Josh Smith added 16 points, nine rebounds and four blocks, while all 12 of Wheza Panzo's points came via 3-pointers.
Stetson roared out to a 20-2 lead and never really looked back. The Hatters had one dry spell as Bellarmine cut the deficit to 20-10, but Stetson regrouped for a 17-1 run that helped drive it to a 40-19 halftime advantage.
Bellarmine never threatened in the second half as Stetson shot 50.9 percent overall and 47.5 percent from 3-point range for the contest. Freshman guard
Peter Suder was the lone Knight in double figures with 14 points.
"That game was lost in the first five minutes. The game was over," Davenport said. "… I've said this game after game after game: We have little to no margin of error, and we had two veteran starters not have a rebound in the first half. There's not one positive anywhere in the game other than
Juston Betz's hustle. I guess the most depressing thing about it is the things we did that we don't practice. … It was just total domination. I'm not very happy."
In contrast to Stetson, Bellarmine was ice cold from the perimeter. The Knights started out the game 0-for-8 from beyond the arc before finally hitting a pair inside the last two minutes before halftime. BU shot 54.2 percent in the second half but still got outscored 40-32 as the Hatters nailed 10 trifectas in the stanza.
Bellarmine will host FGCU at 4 p.m. (ET) Saturday.
