Hot shooting early sets tone for FGCU in win over Knights

FORT MYERS, Fla. — FGCU hit seven 3-pointers in the first quarter alone, setting the tone for an 86-44 victory over the Bellarmine University women's basketball team in ASUN action Saturday night in Alico Arena.

Securing its 19th straight 20-win season, reigning ASUN Tournament and regular season champion FGCU (20-3, 8-1 ASUN) came out sizzling at the outset, sinking its first two 3-pointers to open the game while racing out to a 10-0 lead. The Eagles would drain five more treys in the first period to own a 32-8 advantage over Bellarmine (7-15, 3-6).

In addition to its long-range shooting in the initial quarter, FGCU's pressure defense greatly affected Bellarmine, which had 18 turnovers in the first half that led to 27 Eagles' points as the Knights trailed 43-21 at halftime. BU finished with 27 giveaways, with FGCU amassing 35 points off turnovers.

Sophomore guard Hayley Harrison canned five of her eight shots, including both of her 3-point attempts, in tallying a team-high 15 points for Bellarmine. Sophomore guard Bralee Trice added a career-high nine points, while freshman guard Miyah Brown also notched nine points along with a game-high eight rebounds.

ASUN Preseason Player of the Year Tishara Morehouse led four FGCU players in double figures with 18 points. The Eagles shot 51.6 percent overall and knocked down 12 3-pointers.

Bellarmine will host Austin Peay at 5 p.m. (ET) Thursday in Freedom Hall.
