Women's soccer grinds out 1-1 draw with North Florida

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University women's soccer team battled North Florida to a 1-1 draw Sunday in ASUN action at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.

Sophomore midfielder Alexa Orozco scored a first-half goal for Bellarmine (4-4-5, 1-2-3 ASUN), which collected at least one point in a conference match for the fourth straight game. North Florida (4-6-3, 2-3-1) tied the contest early in the second half, but the teams played to the stalemate from there.

Junior Cambria Kingman and freshman Shelby Smith combined for 10 saves for Bellarmine. Cambria amassed a season-high six in the first half while Smith collected four in the second stanza as North Florida was active in the attack.

Bellarmine had to withstand an early siege by the Ospreys, who were the aggressor at the outset. Kingman had some key saves, including knocking down a UNF shot from point-blank range.

However, even though Bellarmine was under heavy fire to open the match, the Knights still managed to score the only goal of the first half despite being outshot 11-3 in the frame. It came in the 25th minute on a corner kick from freshman midfielder Sydni Whitehead to Orozco, who headed it home for a 1-0 lead.

Orozco's second goal of the season, on Whitehead's team-high third assist, provided Bellarmine the advantage until the 55th minute. The Knights were called for a handball in the box, and UNF's Paige McSwigan capitalized on the ensuing penalty kick.

Both teams had chances after the Ospreys' equalizer. Bellarmine junior midfielder Lindsay Durham entered toward the end of the match and nearly sank a potential game-winner with less than 20 seconds left. She got an open look near the top of the box and drilled a shot that sailed a little high.

North Florida had an 18-6 advantage in shots, including 11-3 on frame.

Bellarmine will play at 8 p.m. (ET) Thursday at Central Arkansas.
