Hobson's goal lifts Knights to Senior Day victory over Lindenwood

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Peyton Hobson brightened up a cool, cloudy Senior Day with a fourth quarter goal to notch the only score of the game and give the Bellarmine Knights a 1-0 victory over the Lindenwood Lions on Sunday afternoon in Trager Stadium.

Prior to the game, Hobson--along with Hannah Brown, Anna Crump, Abby Hodges, Lauren Marshall, Teresa Schmidt and Sophie Stoll-- were honored as part of senior day activities. All seven seniors were in the starting lineup.

The game opened with promise for a high-scoring affair as Lindenwood drew a penalty corner less than 30 seconds into the game.  It produced a shot on goal, but Bellarmine got the save and, as it turned out, was the only shot on goal by either team in the first 30 minutes.  Play was contested mostly outside the circles in the first two periods as the teams combined for just five total shots with only four penalty corners being whistled.

After the halftime break, the Knights were more in attack mode as Bellarmine got off 11 second-half shots with six being on frame.  However, the Lindenwood defense rose to the occasion until the fourth quarter when Paige Hoyer delivered a long pass from the left side of the field into Hobson in the center of the circle.  Hobson was able to collect the ball and sneak a shot into the right side of the cage for the game's only goal with 11:25 remaining.

From that point on, the Knights continued to push the action and kept the ball in the offensive end of the field for most of the rest of the game.  The Lions got one breakaway opportunity, but Bellarmine goalie Kailey Workman came out of the cage to challenge, and Lindenwood could not get off a shot. In fact, the Knights held the Lions without a shot the entire second half.

For the game, Bellarmine outshot the Lions 13-3 while Lindenwood held a 3-2 edge in penalty corners as only one corner was called over the final 30 minutes.

With the win, the Knights improve to 7-7 with just three regular season games remaining.

Bellarmine will be in the Buckeye State for its next two games, returning to Mid-American Conference play when they travel to Athens to face the Ohio Bobcats on Friday.  The Knights then close the road portion of their schedule with a Sunday contest at Ohio State.

The Knights end their regular season with a home contest against MAC foe Kent State on Friday, Oct. 27.

Only four teams in the MAC qualify for the postseason tournament, and Bellarmine is in a tight race for one of the spots.  The Knights' 3-2 conference record has them in a three-way tie for third with the two teams they've yet to face: Ohio and Kent State.  Appalachian State and Miami sit atop the standings with 4-1 records.
