LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University women's soccer team will look to close its 2023 campaign on a high note when the Knights welcome Eastern Kentucky for a 1 p.m. (ET) ASUN match Saturday in Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
While Bellarmine (4-8-5, 1-6-3 ASUN) has been eliminated from ASUN Tournament contention, the youth-heavy Knights can build some momentum heading into next year against Eastern Kentucky (4-8-5, 3-3-4) in their season finale.
EKU will have plenty on the line against Bellarmine. While the Colonels have already clinched a berth in the eight-team ASUN Tournament and cannot rise higher than their current status as the 5-seed, they will look to cement their position and not drop in the seedings.
Eastern Kentucky did the bulk of its point gathering in the ASUN standings in September when the Colonels defeated Austin Peay 1-0, Kennesaw State 3-1 and North Florida 3-0. Last week at home, the Colonels suffered a 1-0 loss to Stetson before posting a 1-1 draw with FGCU.
Gretta Gunn's five assists rank second in the ASUN. EKU's scoring has been exceptionally spread out — 11 players have accounted for the team's 14 goals. Defensively, the Colonels boast a 0.94 goals-against average.
Bellarmine will be celebrating Senior Day and will honor
McKenna Hamm and
Lindsay Durham prior to the game. Hamm has played at defender and in the midfield during her career, appearing in 60 games with 27 starts. Durham has dealt with significant injuries in her career but played at forward or in the midfield in 24 games, including 12 starts. Both Hamm and Durham are three-time ASUN Honor Roll recipients.
Sophomore forward
Clara Spurlock scored her first two goals of the season against Stetson on Sunday. Spurlock became the sixth Knight to record multiple goals for the year after only one player (
Alexa Orozco, with three) accomplished the feat last season. After scoring seven goals all of last season, Bellarmine has amassed 18 this year, including five multi-goal performances.
