LOUISVILLE, KY -- Bellarmine field hockey closed out its regular season with a 1-0 loss to the Kent State Golden Flashes on Friday evening at Trager Stadium. With the loss, the Knights finish the season at 7-10 overall and 3-4 in Mid-American Conference Play.
Kent State scored the decisive goal early as Alex Sacker found the back of the net off a penalty corner in the seventh minute. The Knights could not get anything going offensively in the first half, as they were unable to get into the circle and were outshot by the Golden Flashes 5-0.
Tight defense of their own kept Bellarmine in the game in the second half, as Kent State was limited to just one shot in the third period. Kent State took three consecutive corners early in the fourth quarter, but three saves from
Kailey Workman kept Bellarmine within striking distance. The Knights saw their best opportunity to tie it in the waning seconds of the game, but failed to connect on a cross near the goal line and the Golden Flashes were able to run out the clock.
Overall, Kent State outshot Bellarmine 11-1 and had seven corner opportunities, while Bellarmine was unable to afford themsleves any.Â
Teresa Schmidt registered Bellarmine's only shot of the game, but her attempt in the fourth quarter was off the mark.
Despite the loss, Bellarmine finishes the 2023 season with a new school record in wins since moving to Division I with seven. With three wins in conference play, the Knights have more MAC wins than in their first two seasons in the conference.Â
