CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.—Behind a triple double by sophomore
Kylie VanHoy, the Bellarmine volleyball team swept the host Austin Peay Governors on Friday night in Atlantic Sun Conference action at the Winfield Dunn Center.
VanHoy tallied 12 kills, 12 digs and 22 assists in leading the Knights to their fourth straight victory as they improved to 4-1 in ASUN play. The four wins equal their ASUN wins total from 2022, and the four-match win streak is a new Division 1-era best.
Bellarmine's three set wins, by the scores of 26-24, 25-20, 25-23, came in three different styles. In the first set, the Knights simply outlasted the Governors in a game where the largest margin was three when BU led 22-19. Set two saw the Knights control the action from early on, riding a .406 hitting percentage to the comfortable win. The final set was a back-and-forth affair that saw Austin Peay jump out to an early 6-2 advantage only to see the Knights claw back to take a brief lead before the Governors regained the momentum with a 4-0 run to give them a 21-17 edge. Bellarmine responded with a 3-0 run to creep back into contention. Then, trailing 23-21, the Knights closed on a 4-0 run capped by an
Anna Lococo ace to capture the victory.
In addition to VanHoy's triple double, the Loogootee, Indiana native added a hitting percentage of .611 and two service aces to her incredible stat line. She was far from a one-woman show, however, as several Knights came through with big-time performances.
Anna Purichia tallied 11 kills, her second-most as a Knight, and freshman
Maddie Hagan established a new career high with nine kills while hitting .444 and adding two aces. Other top offensive efforts included
Macie Garrison's 22 assists and
Bailey Venard's 10 kills.
On defense, four Knights reached double digits in digs, led by Lococo's match-high total of 20.
Mara Perry equaled VanHoy's total of 12 digs and reigning ASUN Freshman of the Week
Natalie Bland added 11.
Austin Peay, which fell to 9-9, 2-3 ASUN, was paced by ASUN kills leader Mikayla Powell with 14 on the night.
The Knights get less than 24 hours to savor the victory, as they must travel to Nashville to take on the Lipscomb Bisons tomorrow at 6 p.m. (7 p.m. ET). Lipscomb knocked off Eastern Kentucky in five sets tonight to remain undefeated in league play and will enter tomorrow's match tied with FGCU for the lead in the ASUN at 5-0. The Knights are currently tied with EKU for third in the league standings.
