WEST TERRE HAUTE, IND. - An offensive explosion and some timely fumble recoveries on defense and special teams led the Knights to a 56-50 double overtime road win over the St. Mary-of-the-Woods Pomeroys. With the win, the Knights improve to 4-0 on the season.
The Pomeroys drove it down to the Bellarmine 14 on the opening drive, but the Knights' defense forced a 4th and 20 and SMWC came up short on 4th down.
After a Bellarmine punt, SMWC's Patrick Perea ran it 53 yards down to the Bellarmine 17 yard line and the Pomeroys found the end zone two plays later as Jeremiah Tosky hit Devron Johnson for a 21-yard score. The extra point attempt hit the left upright, leaving the score at 6-0.
After a Bellarmine three-and-out, SMWC took possession at their own 45. Following a big loss on a fumble and subsequent recovery that took the Pomeroys back to their own 36, Tosky found Johnson again for 26 yards to the Knights' 38 as the quarter expired. On the first play of the second quarter, another long pass put SMWC at the Bellarmine 4. The Knights' defense held and forced the Pomeroys to kick a field goal for a 9-0 lead.
Faced with a 3rd and 10 on the ensuing possession, Worley found
Derrik Gant for 14 yards to kickstart Bellarmine's offense. Two plays later, Worley hit Gant again for 20 yards down to the SMWC 36 yard line. The Pomeroys forced a 4th down, but an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty took the Knights down to the 17. Worley ran it down to the six yard line two plays later on an option play and then snuck it in from two yards out to make it 9-7.
Penalties hurt the Knights on SMWC's next drive, as a roughing the passer penalty and a facemask penalty helped take the Pomeroys down to the Bellarmine 21 yard line, and Tosky threw his second TD pass from 21 yards out. A failed two-point conversion attempt left the score at 15-7.
The Knights responded again, as a 26-yard Reid run took the Knights to the SMWC 23. After a six-yard pass to Gant and an eight-yard pass to
Brenden Reid, the Knights had 1st & Goal at the SMWC nine. Three plays later, Worley found
Tyler Smith in the back corner of the end zone for the score. After a two-point conversion attempt came up short, the Knights went into the half trailing 15-13.

Rick Langarica fumbled on the first play of the third quarter, and SMWC recovered at the Knights' 36. One play later following an illegal procedure penalty, Tosky hit Calvin Jasey for a 41-yard TD pass to give the Pomeroys a 22-13 lead.
The Knights responded yet again, as Worley hit Smith on a 32-yard pass to get the Bellarmine offense back into the red zone. Worley found Smith in the end zone again two plays later for a 17-yard TD pass to pull the Knights back to within 22-20.
After Bellarmine recovered a Perea fumble on the first play following the kickoff, Worley found Smith for another 17-yard TD pass. Smith's third TD of the afternoon and Worley's fourth gave Bellarmine their first lead of the game at 27-22.
SMWC fumbled it back to Bellarmine once again on the ensuing kickoff, and Reid pounded it in from three yards out to extend the Knights' lead to 34-22.
The Pomeroys responded with a 9-play, 64-yard drive that was capped off by a Tosky 21-yard TD pass to Jasey. The score remained 34-28 after a botched snap on the extra point attempt.
On the ensuing drive, rushes by Reid and Gant got Bellarmine into SMWC territory before a 45-yard catch and run by
Gavin Foushee got the Knights down to the four-yard line. Following a roughing the passer penalty, Worley snuck it in from a yard out for his fifth total TD of the afternoon. The two-point conversion attempt failed, making it 40-28. Â
SMWC took it right back down the field on their next possession, capping it off with a five-yard TD pass from Tosky to Jasey to pull SMWC back to within 40-35.
After a Bellarmine three-and-out, SMWC drove back down the field and Tosky ran it in from three yards out to give the Pomeroys back the lead. A successful two-point conversion made it 43-40 with 13:32 to play.
The Knights ran on the back of Reid on their next drive. Runs of 31 and 17 yards got the Knights down to the SMWC 27. After the offense stalled,
Caiden Mellecker knocked through a 43-yard field goal to tie it up at 43.
The Pomeroys took the ensuing kickoff and returned it 45 yards to the Bellarmine 45. Six plays later, SMWC scored on a 30-yard pass to make it 50-43. The Knights went three-and-out on the ensuing possession, but a muffed punt gave them possession at the SMWC eight and after initially getting stuffed, Reid scored his second TD from eight yards out to tie it up at 50.
After the two teams exchanged punts, Bellarmine blocked a Pomeroys punt and took possession at the SMWC 34 with 1:28 to play in regulation. After the offense drained the clock, Mellecker came out for a field goal with three seconds left, but pushed it wide right, and the game went into overtime.
After Bellarmine failed to convert on a fourth down in their overtime possession, SMWC took it down to the Bellarmine two, but the defense came up with another key fumble recovery to force a second OT. After SMWC failed to convert on a fourth down in their double overtime possession, another unsportsmanlike conduct penalty gave Bellarmine the ball at the SMWC 10. Two plays later, Reid took it in from nine yards out to give the Knights the victory in double overtime.
Worley finished 14-of-28 for 206 yards and three touchdowns through the air. He also scored twice on the ground.Â
