Chattanooga overtakes men's basketball with game-closing run

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Chattanooga closed the game on a 13-0 run to propel itself past the Bellarmine University men's basketball team for a 72-64 win Tuesday night at McKenzie Arena.

With 3:53 remaining, Bellarmine (0-3) took a 64-59 lead after a tough driving layup by sophomore guard Ben Johnson. Unfortunately, those were the last points the Knights would produce against the Mocs (3-0).

Chattanooga went ahead with just under two minutes left on a putback by Sam Alexis and followed with a step-back 3-pointer by Myles Che. Bellarmine had only five turnovers, but one of the giveaways came on the next possession. Che hit a pair of free throws with 45 seconds left to extend the lead to six, and the Mocs sealed it up after the Knights missed a 3.

Bellarmine missed its final five shots and committed two turnovers during Chattanooga's decisive run to close it out, spoiling an otherwise strong performance in many areas. The Mocs did hold a 39-22 rebounding advantage, although they only had a 10-9 advantage in second-chance points.

Sophomore guards Peter Suder and Johnson, who were both ASUN All-Freshman Team selections last season, combined for 40 points. Suder registered a game-high 21 points behind 8-for-14 shooting and added four steals. Johnson supplied 19 points and senior guard Garrett Tipton chipped in 11 as both he and Johnson sank a trio of 3-pointers apiece. Senior guard Alec Pfriem distributed four assists.

Suder scored a pair of baskets and Johnson drained a pair of 3-pointers as Bellarmine raced out to a 12-2 lead. Chattanooga got untracked and led by five a few times in the first half before taking a 35-32 advantage into the break.

Tipton rattled home a 3-pointer to open the second half, and Bellarmine and Chattanooga were nip-and-tuck from there, with neither holding more than a four-point lead until Johnson bumped it to five on the Knights' final points of the contest.

Bellarmine will play at 7 p.m. (ET) Friday at Bowling Green.
