Men's basketball soars past Midway down stretch

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Bellarmine University men's basketball team used a 17-2 run to take control late over Midway en route to a 77-56 win Tuesday night at Freedom Hall.
 
Five Knights scored in double figures with sophomore guard Ben Johnson leading the way with 18 points, including a 3-of-7 night from beyond the arc. Senior guard Garrett Tipton was a perfect 3-for-3 from distance as he dropped in a season-high 13 points. Sophomore guard Peter Suder (15 points), senior guard Alec Pfriem (11) and junior guard Dezmond McKinney (10) rounded out the double-digit scorers for Bellarmine (2-4).
 
David Woodard led the way for Midway (2-4) with 18 points on 6-for-11 shooting, 5-10 from three.
 
The Knights' defense locked down the Eagles by forcing 19 turnovers and 13 steals, well above their season average of 6.4 steals. Johnson, Suder and McKinney each recorded three swipes.
 
The Knights improved to 4-0 all-time against the Eagles, with each of their matchups coming since the 2016-17 season.
 
Bellarmine returns to action Sunday as they visit the West Virginia Mountaineers in Morgantown at 5 p.m. ET to finish the holiday weekend.
