Bellarmine sprint football suffered its first loss of the season in the regular season finale, losing 28-18 on the road to the Quincy University Hawks. With the loss, Bellarmine finishes the regular season 6-1.
The Knights took the opening kickoff and drove right down the field. A 12-yard pass from
Luke Worley to
Tyler Smith gave them a first down and a 47-yard run by
Devan Hendricks gave Bellarmine first and goal inside the five. Worley took it in on a sneak three plays later to give the Knights the early 7-0 lead.
After Quincy tied it up 7-7, Bellarmine appeared to turn it over, but a Worley interception was nullified by an offsides penalty, giving the Knights a first down at their own 48. Worley hit Smith for completions of nine, 11, and 18 yards on the drive to give Bellarmine a first and goal at the Quincy five yard line as time expired in the first quarter. The Knights were unable to get it in and settled for a
Ben Valle field goal to take a 10-7 lead.
On the ensuing drive, the Knights had Quincy in a 3rd and 11 on the Hawks' 22-yard line, but a Bellarmine pass interference penalty kept the drive going. Quincy scored five plays later, as CJ Jackson ran it to the goal line where the Knights defense would strip the ball out of his grasp, but Quincy's Samuel Coppock recovered it in the end zone to give the Hawks a 14-10 lead.
The two teams exchanged punts on the next two possessions. Starting at their own 44, Bellarmine would drive down to the Hawks' 28 thanks to another Quincy offsides penalty on a third down and a 17-yard rush by
Rick Langarica. Mellecker's 46-yard field goal attempt came up short. Quincy drove it into Bellarmine territory on their next drive, but back-to-back
Roy Shrout sacks pushed them back and kept the score 14-10 at halftime.
The two teams exchanged punts again to begin the third quarter. Quincy's quarterback Deuce Allaway hit on two big pass plays to get the Hawks back into the red zone and Allaway ran it in from six yards out to put the Knights in a 21-10 hole.
The Knights drove into Quincy territory on their next drive, but a Worley interception gave the ball back to the Hawks. Bellarmine took it back two plays later as
Caleb Murray forced and recovered a fumble at the Hawks' 32-yard line.
After a 28-yard Worley pass to Hendricks closed out the third quarter,
Gavin Foushee caught a TD pass from Worley off a deflection. Hendricks ran it in for the two-point conversion to make it 21-18. Quincy responded with a 25-yard Xavier Hinton touchdown reception to go up 28-18.
The Knights went three-and-out on the next drive and Mellecker's punt was blocked, giving Quincy possession at the Bellarmine 13. The Hawks drove down to the one, but an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty pushed them back to the 16 and Quincy ultimately missed a field goal attempt, giving Bellarmine one more chance to cut into the deficit. They could not take advantage however, as Worley was sacked on 4th and 6 and the Hawks were able to run the last five minutes off the clock on their final possession.
Worley finished 12-of-23 for 133 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Hendricks led the Knights on the ground with 73 yards on nine carries. Smith led all Bellarmine receivers with 58 yards on five catches. Â
Defensively, Shrout had two sacks and Murray recorded one, for a total of three tackles for a loss.Â
Allan Ho and
Cross Licht each had two tackles for a loss.
The Knights will now turn their attention to the MSFL playoffs, which begin next Saturday, November 11.
