Men's basketball drops season opener at Washington

SEATTLE, Wash. — Koren Johnson and Keion Brooks Jr. combined for 47 points as Washington defeated the Bellarmine University men's basketball team 91-57 in their season opener Monday night in Alaska Airlines Arena.

Bash Wieland led Bellarmine (0-1) with 14 points, but the senior guard was the only Knight to score in double figures against Washington (1-0). Senior guard Alec Pfriem registered seven rebounds and three assists, while sophomore guard Landin Hacker sank a trio of 3-pointers in scoring nine points with four rebounds.

Johnson hit 10-of-14 shots, including 5-for-8 from 3-point range, in scoring a game-high 25 points for Washington. Brooks Jr. added 22 points while hitting nine of his 15 shots for the Huskies, who shot 62.1 percent and canned half of their 20 3-point attempts.

Bellarmine had a solid start. Sophomore guard Peter Suder scored seven points inside the first eight minutes, Hacker nailed a pair of 3-pointers and sophomore guard Ben Johnson added another one from deep as the Knights led 22-15 with 7:03 left in the first half.

However, it was mostly all Washington from there. The Huskies closed the first half on a 20-5 run to take a 35-27 lead into the break.

Bellarmine was within nine with 15 minutes remaining in the second half after a basket by Wieland, but Johnson took over the game and spearheaded a 14-0 run that pushed Washington's lead to 23. The Huskies' advantage never dipped below 20 after that.

Bellarmine will play at 8 p.m. (ET) Friday at Kansas State.
