SPARTANBURG, SC — The idea is to just find a way in close games on the road.
And for the second straight contest, the Bellarmine University women's basketball team has had the answer.
On Saturday afternoon, Bellarmine captured one of its biggest nonconference wins in the four-year Division-I era after pulling out a heart-racing 61-59 victory over Wofford in Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.
The biggest lead for either team in the fourth quarter was three points, and Bellarmine (2-4) held that with 8:54 left against Wofford (5-4). The advantage ping-ponged back and forth until sophomore forward
Paetynn Gray banked in a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 55 seconds remaining.
Bellarmine proceeded to get a defensive stop and, after a Wofford steal, the Knights sewed up the victory after Terriers standout Rachael Rose (28 points) missed a leaner while attempting to draw contact and Evangelia Paulk was short on a putback attempt just before time expired.
Bellarmine won its second consecutive road game — and second in a row under tense late-game circumstances — after securing a 64-58 win at Evansville in its previous outing. The Knights have dealt with adversity this season after playing without reigning ASUN Freshman of the Year
Gracie Merkle due to injury, and they suffered another blow to the frontcourt when senior forward
Cam Browning exited in the first half with an injury.
If there was a silver lining for this particular game, it was that Wofford is very guard-centric, and Bellarmine comfortably played five guards at times or, more often, utilized four plus Gray. The Knights finished with a 39-33 advantage on the boards.
Gray posted her first double-double as a Knight with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Junior guard
Hayley Harrison had a big second half and finished with a team-high 15 points, six rebounds and three assists, while junior guard
Hope Sivori notched 13 points, six rebounds and five assists. Sophomore guard
Miyah Brown supplied 11 points, six rebounds and four assists, and senior guard
Claire Knies chipped in eight points.
The contest was tight throughout, with six ties and 12 lead changes. Bellarmine had a couple six-point leads in the first quarter before it ended with the teams deadlocked at 15, and Wofford inched ahead 32-29 leading into halftime.
Both teams had five-point leads in the third quarter — Wofford early and Bellarmine late — before the Knights held a 48-45 advantage entering the fourth.
Bellarmine will welcome Purdue Fort Wayne at 6:30 p.m. (ET) Wednesday in its home opener.
