Tipton drops 21, but men’s basketball falls at BYU

PROVO, Utah – Garrett Tipton scored a season-high 21 points for the Bellarmine men's basketball team Friday night, but No. 15/17 BYU ran away in the second half to a 101-59 win at the Marriott Center.

Tipton scored on eight of his 12 field goal attempts, including a 3-of-6 clip from beyond the arc. His 21 points matched Peter Suder's 21 on Nov. 14 at Chattanooga for the highest total by a Knight this season. It was Tipton's highest-scoring game since he poured in 22 at Queens back in February.

Langdon Hatton scored 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds to extend his double-digit scoring streak to six straight games. He also hit his second three-pointer of the season on his only attempt.

Landin Hacker hit on two of his three three-point attempts to give him multiple three-pointers in consecutive games for the first time since January.

Bellarmine (4-10) jumped out to a quick 10-5 lead in the first segment before BYU (11-1) rattled off a 27-8 run to go up 14 points with just under eight minutes remaining in the first half. The Cougars shot 66.7% (24-for-36) in the second half, including 50% (9-for-18) from three, to seize control.

Six Cougars scored in double-figures, led by Noah Waterman's 15. Waterman was also one of four Cougars who hit three threes along with Spencer Johnson, Trevin Knell and Aly Khalifa. BYU shot 58% (40-for-69) for the game and 41% (16-for-39) from distance. The 16 threes were the most by a BU opponent this season.

The Knights have seven days off before heading to North Carolina for their first ever matchup with High Point on Saturday, Dec. 30 at 7 p.m. ET. ESPN+ will have the coverage from Nido and Mariana Quebin Arena.
