LOUISVILLE, Ky. — By the time some shots started falling, it was too late.
On Thursday in the KFC Yum! Center, the Bellarmine University men's basketball team experienced a frigid night shooting that led to a 70-57 loss to North Alabama in ASUN action.
Freshman guard
Peter Suder registered a game-high 17 points but was the lone double-figurer scorer for Bellarmine (12-16, 7-8 ASUN), which shot only 33.3 percent overall and just 20 percent from 3-point range. Senior guard
Juston Betz hauled in a career-high 12 rebounds against the Lions (17-11, 9-6).
KJ Johnson and Jacari Lane tallied 15 points apiece for North Alabama, which has won eight of its last nine games. The Lions outscored Bellarmine by 24 from the 3-point line, sinking 12 of their 29 attempts from beyond the arc while the Knights hit just 4-of-20. UNA shot 57.1 percent in the second half to finish at 45.1 percent for the game.
"Our goal was to keep them out of the paint — points in the paint we win 30-16, so we kept them out of the paint," Bellarmine Coach
Scott Davenport said. "When you get outscored 24 points from the 3-point line, it's mathematically impossible to win the game. Give them credit, they made them."
North Alabama took the lead for good midway through the first half as Lane's fastbreak basket triggered a 17-4 run that propelled the Lions to a 29-20 lead at the intermission. After freshman guard
Ben Johnson canned a 3-pointer at the 12:42 mark, the Knights made only two more field goals the rest of the half.
"Our offense was very, very, very low key, lack of urgency from the opening tip," Davenport said. "We scored 20 points in the first half after scoring 56 points in the second half Saturday (against Queens). And it wasn't just the ball going in the basket: Three-fourths of the way through the first half we had more turnovers than assists, and they weren't forced."
Will Soucie, who had 12 points, opened the second half by hitting a 3-pointer for North Alabama, and the Lions largely maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second stanza. They sank six 3-pointers in the second half, same as before the break.
Bellarmine did creep back within eight with 5:56 left after a pair of free throws by senior guard
Garrett Tipton and UNA followed by missing from deep, but Damian Forrest grabbed the offensive rebound and capitalized with an old-fashioned three-point play. The Knights never got closer than nine thereafter.
Bellarmine will host Central Arkansas at 4 p.m. (ET) Sunday in Freedom Hall. The Knights will celebrate Senior Day.
