Wrestling puts unbeaten home record on the line versus Campbell and The Citadel this weekend

2/9/2023 9:41:00 AM

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Bellarmine wrestling has rolled to 10 dual wins this season – the most in program history.  The Knights (10-2, 2-2 SoCon) are also unbeaten at home (3-0) and will attempt to continue that streak this weekend with SoCon duals versus Campbell and The Citadel.

The Knights take on Campbell at 7:00 p.m. on Friday and The Citadel at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday inside Knights Hall.

Bellarmine last competed Jan. 27 against VMI at home.  Despite trailing 13-0, BU rallied for a 20-19 victory.  An extra-time win by one point for Trayce Eckman (133), a comeback pin by Tavius Hosley (157), and the dual-sealing victory from Devan Hendricks (174) highlighted Bellarmine's rally.

Ten Bellarmine wrestlers now have double figure wins this season, led by Cole Nance (165) with 21.  Thad Huff (HWT) ranks second on the team with 19 wins and his 13 pins are tied for first in the country.  Zac Cowan (149) leads Bellarmine with four tech-falls this year, while Michael Schiffhauer (133/141) has accumulated a team-best six major decision victories.  The Knights currently sit in fifth place in the SoCon standings out of nine teams.

Campbell comes to town first on Friday night, and the Camels present a tough challenge.  Campbell is the four-time defending SoCon champion and was picked to win the league championship again this year.  So far this season, Campbell is 14-8 and tied for first in the SoCon at 5-0 in league action.  Since shifting to conference duals, the Camels have won four straight, most recently defeating The Citadel 27-9 on Sunday.  Campbell boasts four pre-season All-SoCon selections that are unbeaten in conference bouts and slated to compete on Friday – Shannon Hanna (141), Caleb Hopkins (184), Levi Hopkins (197), and Taye Ghadiali (HWT).

Bellarmine will face The Citadel Saturday, and the Bulldogs are 6-4 in dual action this season with a 2-4 SoCon record.  The Citadel was picked to finish fifth in the conference this season and currently reside in sixth place behind Bellarmine.  Prior to the team's loss on Sunday to Campbell, the Bulldogs bested Davidson 22-15 on Feb. 3.  Bellarmine faced Davidson earlier in the season as well and beat the Wildcats by a final score of 27-12.

Both duals can be viewed on BU Knights Sports Network.
