Dayton clips softball in Thursday doubleheader

DAYTON, Ohio — In their first games in 10 days, Bellarmine softball dropped a doubleheader at Dayton on Thursday afternoon.

The Flyers (11-10) clipped the Knights (1-19) 8-0 in game one and 9-1 in game two at UD Softball Stadium.

Game One

Anna Greenwell tallied Bellarmine's lone hit of the first game in the first inning with a double to left field.  Megan Konermann later reached on an error in the fourth inning, but the Knights were unable to produce any other base runners.

Dayton's offensive attack started in the first inning with a pair of hits, one walk, and two runs.  The Flyers added two more in the third inning, highlighted by a Taylor Erschen solo home run.  Dayton scored another pair in the fourth, and closed out the game in the fifth with a Emily Daniel RBI single.

The Flyers held an 11-1 advantage in hits, while the Knights committed two errors.

Izzy Kemp went four innings in the circle for Dayton, earning the win.  Claire Lehmkuhler and Elli Jensen both pitched for Bellarmine.

Game Two

Dayton's game two offense picked up right where it left off.  Erschen blasted her second home run of the day in the first inning, putting the Flyers ahead 2-0.

After a four-spot in the second inning, Dayton expanded its lead to 6-0.  The Knights answered in the fifth with their lone run of the game – Alexis Hargrove singled, advanced to second on a throwing error, and scored on a RBI single from Abbey Nesnidal.

The Flyers ended the game in the bottom half of the inning, however, scoring three runs on four hits and a walk.

Jensen, Lehmkuhler, and Carson Goatley all pitched for Bellarmine in game two, with Goatley turning in a solid two innings of relief – allowing just one run and one hit.

The Knights travel to Nashville for an ASUN-opening series with Lipscomb this weekend.  Games are scheduled for 2pm/4pm ET (1pm/3pm CT) on Saturday and 2pm ET (1pm CT) on Sunday.
