LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine men's tennis team earned a signature victory on Sunday at the Eddie Weber Tennis Complex.
The Knights, in their third season in Division I, topped Florida Gulf Coast 5-2 and moved to 2-0 in ASUN action. FGCU, last season's ASUN runner-up, was picked to finish third in the ASUN preseason poll this season.
Bellarmine set the tone in doubles – the team of
Matthew Nice and
Xavier Ecarma claimed a 6-3 win at the no. 2 spot, while
Eli Wood and
Paul Reynolds nabbed a 6-4 victory in the no. 3 position to secure the doubles point.
BU's depth showed itself in singles, starting with
Jack Batchelor who battled to a 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 win over Randy Wilson at the no. 2 spot.
Vineet Ramesh defeated Guglielmo Stefanacci 7-5, 6-1 at no. 4 singles, while Wood bested Eric Oncins 4-6, 6-1, 10-7 in the no. 5 position. Finally, Ecarma cruised past Carter Bradford 6-3, 6-3 at no. 6 singles.
Following Ecarma's final point to seal the victory, his teammates rushed the court and celebrated their second ASUN win of the season.
The Knights continue their historic season with a DI era record 10 wins and seven regular season matches remaining. Bellarmine next hosts Eastern Kentucky Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
