Baseball resumes ASUN play at Austin Peay; series moved to Saturday-Sunday

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University baseball team is set for its third ASUN series of the season as the Knights will play a three-game set at Austin Peay State.

For the second weekend in a row, Bellarmine's conference schedule has been altered. Instead of single games Friday-Sunday, the Knights will once again play a Saturday doubleheader due to an unfavorable forecast, with first pitch at 2 p.m. (ET) at Raymond C. Hand Park. Sunday's finale will now begin at 3 p.m.

Bellarmine (7-18, 2-4 ASUN) and Austin Peay (10-15, 3-3) are meeting for the first time ever in ASUN play after the Governors joined the conference this season, but the Knights and Governors played twice in both of BU's first two seasons in Division I. APSU holds a 3-1 series lead, including winning both games at Raymond C. Hand Park, but Bellarmine did claim the most recent showdown, 16-8, last season at Knights Field.

Austin Peay is off to a solid start in conference action. The Governors took two of three at home against North Florida to open league play and nearly won last weekend's series at Liberty before falling 6-5 in 10 innings in the finale after splitting the first two games.

APSU's Garrett Martin ranks second in the ASUN with 10 home runs and is tied for 10th with 24 RBI. Jon Jon Gazdar is hitting a team-high .337 and he and teammate Clayton Gray are tied for second in the league in doubles with 10. Lyle Miller-Green is batting .326 with six homers.

Bellarmine took two of three in its ASUN-opening series at Eastern Kentucky, but the Knights were swept last weekend at home by Jacksonville State.

Nolan Pender is the ASUN leader in innings pitched (39.2) while ranking fifth in ERA (2.72). The senior right-hander is also tied for third in wins (three) and tied for 11th in strikeouts (36). Pender has tossed a minimum of 6.0 innings in each of his six starts while allowing one earned run or less in half of those outings. He's yet to allow more than four earned runs in any performance.

Casey Sorg ranks 13th in the ASUN in both batting average at .357 and slugging percentage at .631. The sophomore right fielder is also tied for 12th in hits with 30. Sorg has 11 multi-hit games this season and had a 15-game hitting streak.

Junior outfielder Reed Blaszczyk is tied for ninth in the ASUN in home runs (seven) and also leads the team in RBI (19), while junior first baseman Davis Crane has collected multi-hit games in four of his last seven outings. Senior outfielders Tommy Dilz and Dylan Byerly are batting .348 and .306, respectively.
