LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University baseball team has added a 7 p.m. (ET) contest Wednesday against eighth-ranked University of Louisville at Jim Patterson Stadium on a night that will focus on community and healing throughout the city.
Louisville's two Division I universities will join together for a pregame ceremony and moment of silence in honor of the victims of Monday's tragic events in Louisville. Admission is free.
Chris Dominguez will be leading Bellarmine (10-22) against his alma mater for the first time as head coach of the Knights. Dominguez was one of the most accomplished players in Louisville program history after becoming a two-time All-American and two-time Big East Player of the Year in a career that spanned from 2006-09. In November, he was inducted into U of L's Athletics Hall of Fame.
Dominguez played a central role in Louisville's first-ever run to the College World Series in 2007, which marked the first of five CWS appearances under Head Coach Dan McDonnell, who has amassed 712 victories and 13 NCAA Tournament berths over his 17-year career with the Cardinals.
Bellarmine Assistant Coach
Adam Elliott was also a standout at Louisville, closing out an exemplary five-year career with the Cardinals in 2021. A left-handed reliever, Elliott made 87 appearances on the mound over his tenure while recording an 11-5 record, six saves, a 2.95 ERA and 138 strikeouts in 134.1 innings pitched.
The tradition of success has continued this season for Louisville (24-7), which is once again a top-10 team. The Cardinals are coming off an ACC home sweep of then-No. 7 Boston College by scores of 6-4, 9-8 and 4-2, the middle of which they erased an 8-0 deficit. U of L was selected as the favorite in the ACC preseason poll.
Shortstop Christian Knapczyk and catcher Jack Payton each garnered preseason All-America accolades, with Payton also being acknowledged on the preseason watch list for the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award that recognizes the top amateur baseball player. Validating those honors, Payton is leading the Cardinals in batting average (.386), homers (eight) and RBI (25) while Knapczyk is hitting .328 with 15 steals. The team ERA is 3.91.
Bellarmine is coming off perhaps its most impressive ASUN series win in its three seasons in the conference after the Knights captured two of three games from Stetson. The Hatters entered as the ASUN co-leader, but BU bridged 6-3 and 11-6 victories around a Game 2 loss to secure the series.
In the series,
Peyton Back batted .727 over the three games. The senior infielder went 7-for-8 over the final two games, following a 3-for-3 effort with a 4-for-5 outing. In the 11-6 series-clinching win, he gave the Knights the lead for good with a two-run single.
Freshman shortstop
Luke Scales is on a five-game hitting streak and went 4-for-8 with a double, three RBI and three runs scored in the Stetson series. Senior third baseman/designated hitter
Colin Bertsch accounted for both of Bellarmine's homers in the series while going 5-for-12 with six RBI. Senior center fielder
Will Aubel added a 5-for-10 performance in the series.
Junior outfielder
Reed Blaszczyk is tied for 13th in the ASUN with eight home runs, and he's tied for 11th with nine doubles. Senior utility
Dylan Byerly is hitting a team-high .318, sophomore right fielder
Casey Sorg is at .314 and Bertsch and senior outfielder
Tommy Dilz are both at .310.
