LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Bellarmine softball team opened a three-game series against Central Arkansas with a Saturday doubleheader, and the Bears earned the series win with a pair of shutout victories.
UCA topped BU 3-0 in game one and 8-0 in game two. The Bears entered the weekend in first place in the ASUN and a conference-best 1.60 ERA. With the two victories, UCA improved to 30-8 and 13-1 in league play.
Game One
BU was held to two hits in game one.
Alexis Hargrove tallied a double in the second inning, and
Anna Greenwell singled to lead off the fourth.
The Knights loaded the bases in the fourth inning trailing just 1-0, but a flyout ended the threat.
Jenna Wildeman put UCA in front in the second inning with a RBI single down the left field line. The Bears added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth inning and held on for the win.
Claire Lehmkuhler turned in another strong performance, allowing just three runs and one unearned run over seven innings. Jordan Johnson pitched a complete game shutout for UCA, earning her 14
th win of the season.
Game Two
The Bears picked up their offense in the second game to back up the pitching, scoring in five of the six frames played. Mary Brown drove in the first two runs for UCA with a RBI groundout in the first and sacrifice fly in the third.
UCA added six runs over the fourth, fifth, and sixth to end the game in a run-rule.
The Knights collected four hits in the second contest.
Emily O'Dee went 2-2, while Hargrove and Greenwell went 1-2.
Carson Goatley and
Elli Jensen pitched for Bellarmine, while Kayla Beaver earned her 16
th win of the season in the circle for UCA.
Bellarmine and Central Arkansas wrap up the series tomorrow morning at Knights Field with an 11:00 a.m. first pitch. The action can be viewed on BU Knights Sports Network.
