LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University baseball team's offense was due for a big performance in a series finale in ASUN play, and the Knights certainly delivered Saturday afternoon on their home turf.
Bellarmine tied its conference high with 14 hits, racked up a pair of four-run innings and was backed by a solid tag-team effort on the mound from junior left-hander
Gavin Braunecker and senior right-hander
Devin Ecklar in a series-clinching 11-6 win over Stetson.
Bellarmine (10-22, 5-7 ASUN) took the first and third games against Stetson (20-13, 8-4), which entered the series as the ASUN co-leader. The Knights gained some cushion with a four-run fifth and then restored their edge with a four-run seventh after the Hatters rallied.
It was a much-needed outburst in an ASUN series finale. In the three previous such games, Bellarmine had scored a combined four runs with a pair of shutouts.
Not this time.
Trailing 2-1, Bellarmine did all its damage in the scoring column in the fifth with two outs. Freshman shortstop
Luke Scales had bridged the outs with a single, and senior second baseman
Dylan Byerly kept the inning alive with a base hit.
Junior right fielder
Reed Blaszczyk drove in the tying run with an RBI single. Senior third baseman
Peyton Back then brought home the go-ahead run, and some insurance, with a two-run single. Senior designated hitter
Colin Bertsch capped the scoring in the frame by smacking an RBI double for a 5-2 lead.
After Stetson cut the advantage to 5-4, senior center fielder
Will Aubel led off the sixth with a single, advanced on a sacrifice bunt by senior left fielder
Tommy Dilz and scored on an RBI double by Scales, who would add another run after racing home following a pair of wild pitches for a 7-4 lead.
Stetson got within 7-6 after a two-run homer in the seventh, but Bellarmine answered with four runs in the bottom half. Back had an RBI single, Bertsch drilled a two-run homer for his fifth long ball of the season and Scales executed a squeeze bunt to push the lead to 11-6.
Ecklar took care of the rest. The righty set down all nine batters he faced, including four straight strikeouts bridging the eighth and ninth. After tossing 3.0 scoreless innings, Ecklar recorded his first save this season.
Braunecker notched his first win of the year, striking out a career-high 12 batters in 6.0 innings pitched. The southpaw struck out the side in the second and fanned two apiece in the third through the sixth innings.
Back had a huge outing, going 4-for-5 to set a new career high for hits while adding three RBI. Bertsch went 2-for-4 with four RBI, and Scales was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Blaszczyk and Aubel also had two hits.
Bellarmine will host Morehead State at 2 p.m. (ET) Tuesday.
