Knights, Cardinals baseball to meet at Louisville Slugger Field

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Their time as Division-I counterparts has been brief, but the matchup between the Bellarmine University and University of Louisville baseball teams is already adding a unique twist to the young series.

On Tuesday, the crosstown foes will make the short trip to Louisville Slugger Field to square off in the historic venue that is the home of the Louisville Bats, the Triple-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds.

First pitch between the Knights and Cardinals is set for 6 p.m. (ET). The gates will open at 5 p.m.

Admission to the game will be free. Seating will be available in sections 106-127. Parking in the Louisville Slugger Field lot will be free and "first come, first serve." Concessions will be available.

This season, Bellarmine and Louisville added a previously unscheduled game April 12 at Jim Patterson Stadium. Tuesday's meeting was their original date to meet in 2023. The Knights will be designated as the host and home team in this season's second encounter with the Cardinals.

In Bellarmine Head Coach Chris Dominguez, the Knights and Cardinals share a connection to the Bats. Before joining the coaching ranks, Dominguez was a two-time All-American at U of L and played 96 games with the Bats in the 2015 campaign. The former third baseman spent time with the Reds that year as well.

"This is another opportunity to, again, unite the city with the two Division-I schools that are in town," Dominguez said. "It's awesome to come back as a coach after being a player. It's a really neat stadium, and a nice place to play. I will enjoy being in the dugout again. As a player, I got to come back and play in my hometown because I had been on the west coast. That was also neat, to be playing back in town with the Bats."

Built on the banks of the Ohio River, Louisville Slugger Field opened in April of 2000. The state-of-the-art minor league ballpark seats over 13,000 and underwent extensive renovations prior to the 2021 season.

Bellarmine senior Dylan Byerly is a Louisville native who played his high school baseball at Trinity. His squad squared off against archrival St. Xavier at Louisville Slugger Field during his prep days.

"I'm really looking forward to it, and it will be a great experience playing at a stadium like that," Byerly said. "It's great to get everybody in the community out there at one place at a beautiful park. Playing there in high school, it could be overwhelming, but those kinds of things prepare you for those moments in the future. I think it's going to be really good especially for our younger guys to play there and for the future of our program."
