EVANSVILLE, Ind. — The Bellarmine University men's soccer team opened the 2023 season Thursday with a 1-1 draw against Evansville at McCutchan Stadium.
In his collegiate debut, redshirt freshman midfielder
Calle Sjoberg scored for Bellarmine (0-0-1). Senior midfielder
Rahim Shalash collected an assist against Evansville (0-0-1), which matched the Knights with a second-half goal.
The teams were scoreless at halftime. Bellarmine got on the board on its first shot of the second half, as Sjoberg found the net in the 51st minute off an assist from Shalash.
Evansville drew even less than six minutes later as Nacho Diaz Barragan scored off an assist from Nacho Diaz-Caneja.
Evansville held a 14-7 advantage in shots, including 6-3 on frame. The Purple Aces attempted seven shots in each half. Five of Bellarmine's seven shots came in the second half.

Matthew Brozovich corralled five saves.
Bellarmine will play at 7:30 p.m. (ET) Monday at Louisville.
