Knights tally first goal, but Huskies claim 3-1 win

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine field hockey team drew to an even 1-1 on the season following a 3-1 loss to Northeastern on Sunday afternoon at Trager Field.

The Knights, who had opened their season with a 3-1 win over Saint Louis on Friday, saw the visiting Huskies control the tempo for most of the game.  However, Bellarmine took advantage of one its few opportunities in the first half as Alicia Hudson scored the first goal of the contest (and the first of her career) off a corner about six minutes into the second quarter.

The visiting Huskies evened the score just before the halftime buzzer when Lauren Rowe converted a nice pass from Emilia Adragna.

The second half saw Northeastern continue to dominate play and extended the lead to 3-1 with a pair of goals in the third quarter. The Knights were limited to just three second half shots as the Husky defense pitched a shutout after halftime.

For the game, Northeastern owned big advantages in the offensive statistics, outshooting Bellarmine 24-7 and drawing 11 penalty corners compared to just five for the Knights.

Kailey Workman had a solid day in cage for the Knights, coming up with 10 saves.

"Northeastern was a tough team for us today," said Bellarmine Coach Devanny Boisvert. "They had some great off-ball movement and put quick pressure on us defensively. I was happy to see us get on the board first and for Alicia to get her first collegiate goal."

Boisvert added that the game highlighted areas the Knights need to work on as well as some positive aspects.  "We are looking to do a better job on our outlet passes and getting less turnovers on free hits," she said. On the positive side, she said, "Our attacking 25 to circle entries were solid today, however, we need to set ourselves up for more opportunities."  She added, "Having six of seven shots on frame is pretty solid. I am really proud of Kailey's performance today, but we need to figure out how to alleviate that pressure on her."

Bellarmine returns to action on Thursday when the Knights play their only game on Bellarmine's campus this season, hosting St. Francis University at 3 p.m. in Frazier Stadium.
