LOUISVILLE, Ky. —
Brielle Heuglin is the final remaining member of the Bellarmine University women's soccer team with ties to the Division-II era.
As such, it seemed fitting that the fifth-year senior forward was responsible for the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory over former Great Lakes Valley Conference rival Indianapolis on Sunday afternoon at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
The contest was a countable game for Bellarmine (1-1-1) and classified as an exhibition for UIndy, which hasn't officially started the season. The two were counterparts in the GLVC from 1995 to 2019, after which the Knights made the transition to D1.
Although Bellarmine dominated possession, the match remained scoreless for much of the contest. After consistently threatening, the Knights finally broke through in the 73rd minute.
The sequence actually involved a stellar play by UIndy. Greyhounds goalkeeper Kendall Ellis made a terrific kick save on a shot inside the box by Bellarmine sophomore forward
Clara Spurlock, but Heuglin was first to the loose ball, ramming the rebound into the open net from 8 yards out for a 1-0 lead on her second goal of the season.
Bellarmine's defense was largely impenetrable, but roughly one minute after Heuglin's goal, UIndy's Ella DeSmet broke free and had a one-on-one opportunity against Knights junior goalkeeper
Natalie Schutte, who made both her BU and collegiate debut. Schutte preserved the lead with a save on the Greyhounds' best chance of the contest.
After conceding three goals apiece in the first two games, Bellarmine recorded the shutout after allowing only two shots, both of which were on goal in the second half and each of which was saved by Schutte. The Knights' offense attempted 18 shots, including eight on frame.
Bellarmine will play at 8 p.m. (ET) Thursday at Evansville in its first road game of the season.
