EVANSVILLE, Ind. — The Bellarmine University women's soccer team acquitted itself admirably in its first road environment of the 2023 regular season.
Senior forward
Brielle Heuglin scored in the first half, and freshman forward
Lauren Bingham added an insurance goal after the break as the Knights defeated Evansville 2-0 on Thursday night at Arad McCutchan Stadium.
Bellarmine (2-1-1) won its second straight match and conquered its first road challenge of the season after opening the year with three consecutive home games. The Knights followed their 1-0 shutout of Indianapolis with another clean sheet against Evansville (0-2-2).
Evansville conceded only one goal over its first three games, but Bellarmine doubled that total. Heuglin continued her scorching start to the season, netting her third goal of the year in the 32nd minute. It would stand as the game-winner, giving her two in a row after her tally against UIndy was the difference.
Bingham provided valuable cushion after locating the net in the 72nd minute. Her first collegiate goal increased the Knights' advantage to 2-0.
That's how things ended. Bellarmine kept Evansville off the board despite 16 shots from the Purple Aces. Juniors
Cambria Kingman and
Natalie Schutte combined for a second straight shutout, with Kingman collecting five saves and Schutte registering four.
Bellarmine unloaded 11 shots, converting on two of three attempts on frame.
The Knights will host Chicago State at 2 p.m. (ET) Sunday.
