LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University women's soccer team will swing back home for a 2 p.m. (ET) contest Sunday against Chicago State at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
Bellarmine (2-1-1) and Chicago State (1-3) are meeting for the third time in the Division-I era. The Knights defeated the Cougars 3-2 at home in 2021 while they played to a scoreless draw last season in The Windy City. BU's three goals in the initial contest remain tied for the D1-era program record.
This is the first time in four matches that Bellarmine is playing a team outside of Indiana. The Knights' three previous games were against Evansville, Indianapolis and IUPUI, all residing in the Hoosier State. BU has won two straight, defeating the Greyhounds 1-0 at home and Evansville 2-0 on the road as juniors
Cambria Kingman and
Natalie Schutte combined for the shutouts in goal in both performances.
In only four games, Bellarmine has bested its win total from last season, a draw-heavy campaign that saw the Knights finish 1-7-9 despite boasting the ASUN's second-ranked defense. BU's strides offensively have been clear in the early going, as the Knights have essentially matched their goal total from last season, when they tallied six plus an own goal. They have netted six goals this season without any additional assistance.
Brielle Heuglin has registered three goals in four games. The senior forward has already tied a career high after notching three her freshman year in 2019, Bellarmine's final season in D2. Heuglin notched the game-winning goals in the victories over UIndy and Evansville. Freshman forward
Lauren Bingham scored her first collegiate goal in the triumph over the Purple Aces.
Jacqueline Tamayo has been a standout for Chicago State. She has scored all four of the Cougars' goals this season, including a pair against Lindenwood. Chicago State opened the season with a 1-0 home win over Purdue Fort Wayne. The Cougars then fell 1-0 at home to Western Illinois, 4-2 on the road to Lindenwood and 5-1 on the road to Valparaiso.
