Schmidt's golden goal lifts Knights to win over Longwood in double OT

FARMVILLE, Va. — Teresa Schmidt's golden goal lifted the Bellarmine field hockey team to a 3-2 victory in double overtime over Longwood in a Mid-American Conference game at Elizabeth Burger Jackson Field on Friday.

Bellarmine's Peyton Hobson took possession of the ball just outside the right wing of the circle and dribbled inside the arc along the endline and fed a pass to Schmidt that caromed off a defender's stick, but Schmidt collected ball and deposited it in the left side of the goal with 6:45 remaining in the second overtime for the win.

In a game that saw Longwood win most of the smaller battles, Bellarmine was able to win the war by generating its own offense rather than relying on penalty corners.

For the game, Longwood owned big advantages in both shots (17-9) and penalty corners (12-4), but the Knights capitalized on its few opportunities.

Both of Bellarmine's goals in regulation came in the second period. The first came in a similar fashion to the winning score.  Sophie Stoll pushed the ball along the endline and passed to the front of the cage where the ball ricocheted off a defender and Hobson corralled the ball and found the back of the cage.  The second goal came just before halftime when Schmidt took possession near the top of the circle, spun to her left and rocketed a shot into the right side of the cage with just 26 seconds on the clock.

"I was really happy with our performance in the first half," said Bellarmine Coach Devanny Boisvert. "We played disciplined, team field hockey."

After taking a 2-0 lead into the intermission, the Knights saw the Lancers battle back by controlling the tempo and drawing, then scoring on, penalty corners in both the third and fourth quarters. "Longwood was very determined in the second half and did a great job at earning corners against us," Boisvert said.

However, after it was the Knights who controlled the tempo once the game moved to a seven-on-seven situation in the overtime periods.  In the first extra session, Bellarmine had several opportunities inside the circle, but couldn't get off a shot.  The Lancers actually got off two shots, but neither was on target.

"The team regrouped and we were able to put together some nice opportunities," said Boisvert. "Our forwards did a great job at our baseline entries, which is something we work on at practice, so I was very proud we executed on that play in overtime with Peyton and T.  Teresa had a nose for the goal today, finishing on minimal opportunities. Today's game gave us a lot to learn from and a lot to celebrate."

With the win—their second double overtime victory of the season—the Knights improve to 3-7 and 1-1 in MAC play.  The Lancers drop to 2-7, 0-2 MAC.

The Knights return to play on Sunday when they'll step out of MAC action to take on Queens University at 11 a.m.
