Women's soccer sets D1-era scoring record in 4-2 triumph over Jacksonville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University women's soccer team was clearly happy to be home.

On Thursday night in Owsley B. Frazier Stadium, the Knights set a Division I-era program record for scoring in a 4-2 victory over Jacksonville in ASUN action.

Four different Knights accounted for the goals for Bellarmine (4-4-4, 1-2-2 ASUN), which captured its first conference win. BU had scored three goals on three occasions in the D1 era, including in this year's season opener against Northern Kentucky.

Bellarmine was coming off a demanding stretch of five road games over its previous six matches. Jacksonville (2-8-2, 0-5) represented the first in a much-welcomed two-game homestand as the Knights had an offensive explosion after a recent scoring lull.

Sophomore defenders Sidney Rigsby and Emily Passini both netted the first goals of their respective careers, junior Emma Nicholson notched her second of the season and senior forward Brielle Heuglin tallied her team-high fourth of the year. Heuglin also had an assist, as did freshman midfielder Sydni Whitehead and sophomore midfielder Alexa Orozco.

Bellarmine scored its first three goals inside the first 25 minutes. A little over two minutes into the contest, Rigsby punched in a header off a Whitehead corner kick.

Bellarmine boosted the lead to 2-0 in the 13th minute. Heuglin spotted Passini on the right flank, and she drilled a shot over the Jacksonville goalkeeper from 25 yards.

Nicholson got in on the act in the 25th minute. She tracked down an expert through ball from Orozco, racing past the defense and sinking an open look from 8 yards.

Despite facing a hefty deficit, Jacksonville did not wilt. With three minutes left before halftime, the Dolphins were awarded a penalty kick, and Lillian Young converted to give JU some momentum heading into the break.

Jacksonville kept pushing in the second half, and Young capitalized on a loose ball and open net for her second goal of the night and sixth of the season in the 64th minute.

Jacksonville came close on multiple occasions to equalizing the match. The Dolphins had a shot carom off the crossbar, and Knights freshman goalkeeper Shelby Smith made a leaping save on a shot from Beyonce Robinson that appeared headed for the top of the net. Young had a close look for a potential hat trick that was off target as well.

Bellarmine restored some breathing room in the 79th minute as Rigsby was brought down in the box on a set piece and a PK was awarded. Heuglin buried the opportunity to bump the lead to 4-2, which stood as the final score.

Bellarmine finished with a 15-13 advantage in shots, including 7-6 on frame.

Bellarmine will host North Florida at 1 p.m. (ET) Sunday.
