Rams squeak past Knights 1-0 despite Workman's 12 saves

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine field hockey team fell 1-0 to Virginia Commonwealth on Friday afternoon in a nonconference game at Trager Stadium.

The Rams ran their record to 4-0 on the season as the visitors converted on a third quarter penalty corner for the game's only goal.  Mora Moreno got the goal as she tipped in a hard shot off the stick of Morena Macera.

For the game, VCU owned big advantages across the stat sheet, outshooting Bellarmine 23-7 and drawing 10 penalty corners to just four for the Knights.  However, a strong defensive effort by Bellarmine kept the game close throughout.

Bellarmine goalkeeper Kailey Workman recorded a career-high 12 saves and Alexa Rastigue notched her second defensive save of the season and 11th of her career.  "Kailey played incredible this afternoon," said Bellarmine Coach Devanny Boisvert. "She was aggressive and had some huge saves for us."

Bellarmine falls to 1-4 on the season, but despite the loss, Boisvert said she was pleased with her team's performance. "Although the stats sheet was in VCU's favor," she said, "it was one of our most consistent games we've been able to put together this season.  Our effort and hustle were big factors for keeping us in the game. We demanded our backs stay with their marks and focus on the intercept and they did a fabulous job at executing, specifically Hannah Brown."

Boisvert added that the Knights made some halftime adjustments that she was pleased to see implemented against a quality opponent.  "We wanted to utilize our midfielders to generate more up numbers situations, and we were able to do that," she said. "VCU is a very tough opponent.  They've had solid wins against talented teams, so I was proud we stayed in the game and had opportunities to equalize it."

The Knights return to action Sunday at 9 a.m. when they welcome the Davidson College Wildcats to Trager Stadium.
