LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University women's basketball team appeared as if it delivered the game-winning basket, but in the blink of an eye, North Alabama was back ahead.
The Lions' defense held on the other end to escape Freedom Hall with a 91-90 win in overtime over the Knights on Thursday in ASUN action.
There were six lead changes in the extra session between Bellarmine (5-11, 0-4 ASUN) and North Alabama (6-11, 2-2). On the fifth, Bellarmine junior guard
Hayley Harrison started a drive toward the basket before firing underneath to senior forward
Cam Browning for a layup and 90-89 lead with 11 seconds left.
However, before Bellarmine fans could finish celebrating the potential game-winning basket, North Alabama's Alyssa Clutter was already on the other end of the floor putting in a shot that swung the lead back in the Lions' favor a mere six seconds later.
Bellarmine had one last chance, but the Knights mishandled the ball on their final possession and could not get a shot off. In addition to hitting the game-winning shot, Clutter scored a team-high 23 points on 10-for-14 shooting while grabbing 11 rebounds and recording five steals.
Both junior guard
Hope Sivori and sophomore guard
Miyah Brown posted career highs in scoring. Sivori poured in a game-high 26 points behind 9-for-13 shooting, including 3-of-5 from long range, and added six rebounds and five assists. Brown notched her second double-double of the season after supplying 21 points and 11 rebounds to go along with four assists.
Bellarmine's 90 points were its most against a Division-I opponent in the four-year D1 era. The Knights cooled off in the second half after shooting a sizzling 60 percent (18-of-30) over the first two quarters, but they still finished at 46.8 percent for the game, their second-best mark this season against a D1 opponent.
Bellarmine bolted out to a 26-16 lead after one quarter and took a 46-41 advantage into halftime. North Alabama started turning the tables in the third period and held a 59-55 lead heading into the fourth.
Once there, the Lions built a 67-60 advantage with 7:55 left, but this time Bellarmine answered, going on a 10-2 run to wrangle the lead back with less than four minutes remaining. The Knights went ahead 77-75 with a minute left after senior guard
Ashlee Harris spotted Browning for a basket following an offensive rebound, but UNA tied it up again on the ensuing possession.
Both defenses followed with a stop to send the contest into overtime. For the game, there were 14 lead changes and 11 ties.
Harrison chipped in 13 points for Bellarmine, which will host Central Arkansas at 1 p.m. (ET) Saturday on Homecoming and Alumnae Day.
